IELTS Speaking Part 3
Generations In The Family: Part 3 questions and answers
The discussion questions examiners asked after the cue card “Describe someone older than you whom you admire”, each with a short Band 7 answer. Play the question, answer it yourself, then compare.
What can young people learn from older generations?
Band 7 answer
Young people can learn patience and practical judgement from older generations. Older adults have faced economic hardship or major changes, so they often know how to stay calm when plans go wrong. For example, a grandmother might explain that she learned from experience after losing money in a small shop, and she would advise her grandson to check costs before expanding. That story is more useful than a general warning, but some old advice doesn’t fit modern work.
Make it longer Add a new example: a grandfather could teach a grandchild to repair a bicycle instead of replacing it, which shows patience and how to save money.
Are there things older people can learn from the younger generation?
Band 7 answer
Yes, older people can learn a lot from younger generations, especially about technology and changing attitudes. Young adults often keep up with new apps, so they, um, most of them, might show a grandparent how to use a banking app or a video call. I mean, after a cousin showed one grandmother how to send voice messages, she began contacting relatives that way every evening. It was a good change, and it made family contact easier because she were less isolated. Still, some older people prefer familiar methods.
Make it longer Add a contrast: some older relatives refuse these apps because they’re worried about privacy or pressing the wrong button.
Do you think there is a big generation gap between young and older adults nowadays?
Band 7 answer
Yes, there can be a big generation gap, but it depends on the family. For example, a young Vietnamese graduate may want freelance work and flexible hours, while his parents expect a stable office job and a clear career path. That difference can create tension, and the same thing may happen over clothes or money. Families who bridge the gap by sharing hobbies often become more patient with each other, although they - well, some of them - still disagree sometimes. In my experience, distance make the gap worse.
Make it longer Add a new example: a Vietnamese daughter may want to marry later, while her parents worry about family expectations and timing.
What role do older adults play in a traditional family?
Band 7 answer
In a traditional family, older adults often act as advisers and carers, and they help preserve the family’s customs. For example, grandparents may prepare the Tet altar, explain the meaning of the offerings, and pass down traditions through stories, so children know what to do during the holiday. They - well, most of them - may also look after young children when parents are busy. In my country, this can be a good thing, but it becomes difficult if relatives expect everyone to follow their rules.
Make it longer Add a new example: an elderly uncle might organise a family ceremony when relatives return from different cities.
How has the status of older adults in the family changed compared to the past?
Band 7 answer
Older adults are still held in high regard in many families, but they have less control than they did in the past. In earlier Vietnamese households, several generations might share one home, so grandparents had a voice in spending and marriage decisions and many daily things. Today, younger couples often sets up their own homes and manage money themselves. At the same time, they - well, many of them - can still give useful advice, and their opinions matter, but they don’t automatically decide what the family does.
Make it longer Add a new comparison: in the past, grandparents often chose a grandchild's name or school, whereas today parents usually make those decisions themselves.
