IELTS Speaking Part 3
Films And Cinema: Part 3 questions and answers
The discussion questions examiners asked after the cue card “Describe a movie you watched recently”, each with a short Band 7 answer. Play the question, answer it yourself, then compare.
Why do some people prefer to watch films in the cinema rather than at home?
Band 7 answer
Some people prefer the cinema because the large screen and powerful sound help them get lost in the story. At home, viewers can check their phones, talk to relatives, and deal with other interruptions, so the film may feel less special. In Vietnam, young adults often treat a cinema visit as a social outing after dinner. They - well, most of them - enjoy the atmosphere and the shared reaction. However, people with small children usually choose home viewing because it’s cheaper and the cinema give them less control.
Make it longer Add a contrast about watching a quiet art film at home, where viewers can pause and think about difficult scenes.
Do successful films need well-known actors in the leading roles?
Band 7 answer
No, successful films don’t always need well-known actors. A familiar face can create publicity and make investors feel safer, but the actor still has to suit the role. There are film where a relatively unknown performer can carry the film through a believable performance, while a major star might seem unnatural. They - well, most of them - need to fit the character. For instance, a serious Vietnamese family drama may work best with actors who look like ordinary parents and teenagers. In a superhero film, though, famous actors can make audiences curious before release.
Make it longer Add a new example about an animated film becoming a hit even though most viewers didn't know any of the voice actors.
Do you think the best films are always made by well-known directors?
Band 7 answer
Well, no, the best films aren’t always made by well-known directors. Experienced filmmakers usually understand budgets and production things better, but an unknown director may take a risk with an unusual structure or a sensitive subject. A young filmmaker in Vietnam could make a name for themselves by creating a quiet film about life in a rural area, even without expensive effects. They - well, most of them - may bring a fresh viewpoint, and established directors can be more reliable. Their films are easier to promote, but they sometimes repeat their usual style.
Make it longer Add a personal-style detail about preferring a director’s early, less polished films because they feel more surprising.
What factors make a film successful?
Band 7 answer
A film need a strong story, good acting, and promotion that reaches the right audience. Most importantly, I mean, the characters should strike a chord with audiences, so people feel the situation is connected to their own lives. Timing can matter too, because a family comedy may do well during a national holiday. In my country, online discussion also creates interest, and recommendations spread quite quickly. Viewers - well, many of them - like good advertising, but it can’t save a film if the acting feels unnatural or the ending is too rushed.
Make it longer Add a new example of a low-budget film succeeding because its characters reflect the worries of office workers.
Do people in your country prefer domestic films or foreign films?
Band 7 answer
Well, I’d say preferences in Vietnam are mixed rather than clearly one-sided. Foreign films are attractive because they often offer good effects, while domestic comedies and family dramas can draw viewers in with familiar language and situations. For example, younger people may choose a Korean romance with friends, but parents might prefer a Vietnamese comedy during Tet. They - well, some of them - choose foreign films for the spectacle and local films for the humour. Foreign films are still very visible in cinemas, and local films can also perform extremely well when the acting and humour feels natural.
Make it longer Add a contrast involving older viewers, who may avoid films with subtitles and choose Vietnamese-language stories instead.
Why do some people enjoy watching films more than once?
Band 7 answer
Some people enjoy rewatching a film because they can understand the plot better without worrying about what happens next. They may pick up on clues in the dialogue or notice how an actor changes their expression. Others choose familiar comedy when they’re tired, because it feels relaxing and they already know the ending. They - well, most of them - enjoy the predictable parts and the jokes. In Vietnam, friends sometimes watch the same funny film together so they can react to the jokes. Still, people enjoys this less when the whole film depends on one surprise.
Make it longer Add a new personal-style example about rewatching a film years later and understanding its adult themes differently.
